About the Ministry

The Ministry of Defence is a pivotal ministry of the Government of India, responsible for coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions related to national security and the Indian Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence is the largest ministry in the Government of India in terms of both budget and personnel. It is headed by the Defence Minister of India, a cabinet-level position.

The Ministry of Defence is divided into five departments: Department of Defence (DOD), Department of Defence Production (DDP), Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (DESW), Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D), and Department of Military Affairs (DMA). The principal task of the Ministry is to obtain policy directions of the Government on all defence and security matters and communicate them for implementation to various stakeholders.
